Stanton Bird Club field trips are free and open to the public. All trips leave 5 minutes after listed departure time. Car pooling is encouraged. In the event of inclement weather, contact the trip leader the night before to see if the trip is still on. For general information concerning field trips, contact Dan Marquis.

Birding at New Gloucester MarshNOVEMBER 10, Saturday: 7am-11am. Lewiston/Auburn lakes and rivers. An exploration of pre- ice water for ducks and other late migrants. Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at J.C. Penney parking lot. Results

DECEMBER 1, Saturday: 8am-4pm. Marginal Way, Ogunquit.
Early winter ducks, especially Harlequins, and maybe a King Eider, are the specialty of the day here. Dress warm, and bring a lunch. Leader: Dan Marquis. Meet at Staples parking lot. Results

DECEMBER 22, Saturday: Dawn till dusk. Annual Christmas Bird Count.
Do your part in this annual census of our resident bird population. A challenging and fun day of birding, followed by an evening of compiling and a pizza feast. Contact Stan DeOrsey for more info & sector assignments. Results

JANUARY 12, Saturday: 8am-Noon. Reid State Park. Leader: Dan Marquis. Meet at Staples parking lot. Results

FEBRUARY 9, Saturday: 8am-1pm. Leader's Choice.
Instead of a predetermined destination, we'll wait to see where the best birds are being seen this week and head off in search of them ourselves. Leader: Dan Marquis. Meet at J.C. Penney. Results

FEB. 23, Saturday: 9am-11am. Tracking at Thorncrag.
The winter wildlife at Thorncrag leave many signs that they are living and surviving in the woods, fields, and ponds of the sanctuary. Come learn to identify the tracks, scat, and clues along the trails. Snowshoes or skis may be necessary if the snow is deep. Leader: Susan Hayward. Meet at Thorncrag parking lot.

MARCH 8, Saturday: 8am-1pm. Back Cove & Cape Elizabeth.
Winter ducks, geese, grebes and gannets are what we'll be looking for on this trip to the coast. Dress warm! Leader: Dan Marquis. Meet at Staples parking lot.

APRIL 19, Saturday: 6:30pm-8:30pm. Herping at Thorncrag.
We'll be checking the ponds for frogs, toads and salamanders. Bring a flashlight. Leader: Susan Hayward. Meet at Thorncrag parking lot.

APRIL 22, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk I.
Start your celebration of Earth Day with an early morning bird walk beginning at the front of Hathorn Hall on the Bates College campus, past Mt. David to Riverside Cemetery. There will be activities all day along the river, Lake Auburn, and in town. Watch the paper for a full schedule of events. Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at Hathorn Hall. Results

APRIL 26, Saturday: 9am-11am. Spring Ephemeral Flowers at Thorncrag.
The wildflowers of Maine begin early to bloom before the leaves of the forest block the
sun. Come enjoy an easy walk along the trails to find these delicate, pastel treasures. Leader: Susan Hayward. Meet at Thorncrag parking lot.

April 29, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk II.

MAY 6, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk III.

MAY 10, Saturday: 7am -Noon. Evergreen Cemetery.
This Portland hotspot is a migrant trap, and usually yields an abundance of warblers. Leader: Dan Marquis. Meet at Staples parking lot. Results

MAY 13, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk IV.
Leader: Tom Hayward.

MAY 17, Saturday: 7am-Noon. New Gloucester Marsh/Pineland Farms.
Virginia Rails and other marsh birds, followed by birds of woodland edges and open farm fields. Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at J.C. Penney.

MAY 18, Sunday: 7am-10am. Warren Warbler Walk.
SBC's longest continually offered bird walk. This perennial favorite goes through some prime habitat, including riparian, woodland and farm fields. Leader: Tom Hayward. Meet at J.C. Penney.

MAY 20, Tuesday: 6am-8:30am. Lewiston Bird Walk V.
Leader: Tom Hayward.

MAY 21, Wednesday: 7am-? Birding at Sylvester's.
An annual favorite. Bird through prime riverside habitat. Those who have the time may want to continue on to the Benjamin farm to round out the morning's birding. Meet at Sylvester's. 1128 Riverside Dr., Auburn. Leader: Tom Hayward.

MAY 31, Saturday: 7am-Noon. Birds & Flowers of Beaver Park, Lisbon.
Leaders: Stan DeOrsey and Susan Hayward. Meet at Staples parking lot.

JUNE 14, Saturday: 7am-11am. Summer Birds of Thorncrag.
The forests and fields of Thorncrag hold a wealth of birds in summer, including two new residents, Bluebirds and Meadowlarks. Leader: Stan DeOrsey. Meet at Thorncrag parking lot.

AUGUST 23, Saturday: 7:30am-1pm. Scarborough Marsh.
Leader: Dan Marquis. Meet at Staples parking lot.

SEPTEMBER 6, Saturday: 6am - 4pm. Plum Island.
This coastal sanctuary is a major stop-over point for numerous species of birds headed south for the winter. Bring a lunch. Leaders: Tom & Susan Hayward. Meet at Staples parking lot.

OCTOBER 4, Saturday, rain date October. 5 Sunday, 9:30 AM - 2 PM. The Fall Festival at Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary. A day of fun activities for all ages to discover the secrets of the forest, fields, and wetland habitats in the fall. For more information contact Susan Hayward.

Bird & Nature Walks
With Stan & Joan DeOrsey and Susan Hayward

-- Meeting Location: Except on Sept. 26, walks leave at 8am from the
Staples parking lot, 855 Lisbon St., Lewiston to be at the walk site at
8:20am. Only the Sept. 26 walk leaves from the Penney's parking lot,
Auburn Mall, 550 Center St. at 8am.
-- Walks end by 11am, but you may leave early.
-- If raining or snowing at 7am and predicted to continue through 10am,
the walk is canceled.
-- Bring binoculars and dress for the weather; layers work very well.
-- Walks are approximately 2 miles on an even and basically dry surface.
