Mandarin Duck in Ogunquit
(January-February 2005)
This Mandarin Duck, native to Asia, spent at least part of the winter of 2005 at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Maine. Although there is also a feral population in California, it is believed this duck is most likely an escapee from a private collection. Nonetheless, it is still a magnificent bird; perhaps the only duck that can rival (perhaps surpass) the Wood Duck in beauty. Although it may not be a truely wild bird, it is still a pleasure to view it in the wild along with other wild ducks. This drake Mandarin spends its time consorting with the local Mallards, Black ducks, and other bay ducks in the calm protected waters of Perkins cove. Whether you count it on your life list or not, it is worth the trip to see it.
