Androscoggin Valley Community Network (AVCNet) Information

Goals and Plans

In the spring of 1996, the Board of Directors set a primary goal to bring our own WWW server online. As that goal approached reality in February of 1997, through the donation of a computer by Liberty Mutual Insurance, the Board added further goals of providing free e-mail accounts at the Lewiston Public Library for those who don't have computers and modems at home, and setting up electronic mailing lists of local interest. These goals fall into a general framework to provide a comprehensive set of Internet services to the community. The Board reviewed a visual depiction of these services (shown below), and approved all of them, as computers and funds are available, except for the dial-in service. The Board believes that the area is well covered by a number of Internet Service Providers and that no purpose would be served by spending a lot of time and money duplicating that coverage.
