WESTBROOK LETTER 1722 - Ethnographic Questions

Ethnographic Questions

Dr. de Laforcade he directed me to ask Ms. Lecompte the following questions: How do the archives remember the Abenaki? How does that compare with the way Westbrook describes the context? What is your version? Is there a conflict that is played out in how memory is constructed? How do the present-day descendants of the Abenaki "reinvent" their heritage for the purposes of cultural pride? Are they victims of an ficial story handed down by the state of Maine? I did this and added the following of my own. Do you have any information of the Arrowsic treaty? Is there any record of these particular events described in Westbrooks' letter in your history? Are you inclined to comment on any part of Westbrooks' letter? Do you know of other Wabanaki who may like to add their input to this research? At this time I sent a copy of the Westbrook letter to Ms. Lecompte.

While awaiting her response I began trying to find the individuals involved. I didn't spend too much time on this aspect however because my main focus were the Native Americans mentioned. I did E-mail some families with the last names Westbrook, Foster, Rose, Walton and Dummer who had genealogical sites on the World Wide Web figuring that if the present-day families of the individuals in the letter had done their genealogy, they may be able to add information. Unfortunately, none of the families I contacted were, to their knowledge, related to the ones in the letter. I continued to gather research on Sebastien Rasles and Dummer's War.
