Walambois
Last updated 03-Sep-00
- Possible Family Origin: Probably a Western Abenaki name [Day 1981] - possibly Androscoggin, son of Metallic? [NL]
- Other Possibly Spellings: Walambais
- Probable Native Name: walôbá 'nice looking man' or walôbáia 'nice looking little man' or 'son of walôba' [Day 1981]
- Other Places Where Family Name Appears: possibly Megalloway Region
- Other Notes: Antoine Walambais is listed from 1829 to 1844. He had a son Xavier who was a married adult by 1844.
Antoine is probably the man listed as A. Matelok on the 1812 Roster, but not in any of the census records. The listing on the 1812 roster indicates he and/or his heirs were still at Odanak in 1844 and lends support to this belief. Metallic's son Antoine was also known by English settlers as Wilumpi which could easily be an anglicized from Walambois. We do know that Metallic's sons fought for the English in the War of 1812.
