Pamaguimet
Last updated 26-Jul-00
- Possible Family Origin: Probably a Western Abenaki name [Day 1981] - probably Androscoggin [NL]
- Other Possibly Spellings: Pamaguiment, Pamaguimite, Pamguimite, Pamguimit, Pimoguimit, Pamaguimet
- Probable Native Name: pemágwamit 'the one who sticks to something', as, for example, to a tree being climbed with spurs [Day 1981]
- Other Places Where Family Name Appears: possibly Megalloway Region, Durham PQ
- Other Notes: Parmagummet is thought to be s/o Metallic and tradition says he fought in the war of 1812 (for the English) but his name does not appear on the roster. His name does appear on lists from 1829-44. He appears to have three sons; Joseph, Joseph Marie, & Theophile. Therese Pamaguimet listed on the 1861 census is most likely a daughter. She was b.abt.1814 and m. by 1841 to Joseph Marie Magoua. Joseph & Theophile appear as adults in 1841-45 census. Joseph Marie appears as adult in 1841-52 and lived at Durham.
There also appears to be some relationship to the Capino family. In the 1841 census, Francois de Sale Capino has 'Pamaguiomet' in the remarks column. His parents were Joseph Thomas Capino and Marie Anne Otondosonne. Their known children are: Joseph b.1814 in census 1850-52, Marie Eulalie b.1816 and m.1838 from Durham at that time, Francois de Sale b.1821 m.1838 from Durham and in census 1841-1852, Theophile b.1823 m.1852 in census 1840-1852 and living at Durham.
With the exception of Francois, this Capino family does not appear in Odanak census until 1850, yet they do appear in church records much earlier. The Pamaguimet family does not appear in church records that we have access to and is not in census after 1845. The records that we have do allow for the possibility that Pamaguimet is the same person as Joseph Thomas Capino. If so, than he is not very likely a son of Metallic.

In the later part of the 1800's the Paquette family was involved in a bitter political battle over thier right to benefit from tribal membership. Robert was a white man and the government had passed laws prohibing white men and thier families from being legal members of the wife's tribe. At one point the family was removed from tribal membership lists. They were later reinstated, with consent from the government, but lost the land at Odanak that they had previously farmed.
