Biography
John Johnson - 1797 to 1894
125th NY Regiment - Co. I

John Johnson Gravestone

John Johnson is buried at Lake George NY.

John Johnson (possibly Johanson) was born 6-Jul-1796 and died 14-Apr-1894. He married Alice Mitchell, an Indian woman who was probably full blooded Abenaki. She may have been his second wife. His last wife was Lucy Bailey, whom he married 10-Jun-1890 at North Creek, NY. In 1862 his occupation was shoemaker.

According to descendants and various records; "The Johnsons were of mixed Indian and white blood related on the Indian side to the Watso-Watsaw families who lived in a small community at the east end of 13th Lake. They also lived in the town of Chester and North River, N.Y. eventually settling in Lake George, N.Y."

He enlisted at Troy, VT for 3 years service in Co. I, 125th NY Infantry Regiment. Some military records show his age as 43, so we assume he lied about his age. He was actually 68 years old at the time of enlistment in August of 1862. In November he was listed as sick in the hospital and was discharged 21-Feb-1863 from Patterson Park Hospital, Baltimore MD. He was treated "at Martinsburg VA and Chicago Ill and Harpers Ferry VA and Patteron Park Hospital Baltimore MD Jan 1863, and by regiment surgeon."

Immediately after enlistment, his regiment was sent to the post at Harper's Ferry. Here they were captured on Sept. 15 at the surrender of the post. The regiment was paroled the next day and sent to a paroled camp at Chicago where they stayed for two months.

His pension records indicate the following health problems;

Physical Description: 5´11", Dark complexion, Blue eyes, Black hair
Enlistment: 5-Aug-1862 to 21-Feb-1863
