Recreation on the
Androscoggin River

Access point descriptions refer to river right and river left as viewed facing downstream. Only public sites or bridges are included in this list. In some areas there are other commonly used access sites on the river. Ask locally and get permission before using. Some dams have portage trails and access both upstream and downstream of the dam. Some dams do not have a practicable route around, have a unusually long carry, or do not have access. Those with reasonable access and carry routes are marked PORTAGE.

A 21. Rumford Boat Launch
Off Rt. 2 on the north side (river left) The boat launch is a ramp marked by a blue state sign.

A 22. Mexico Boat Launch
Follow Rt. 2 signs through Rumford into Mexico. Immediately after crossing the Swift River, turn left into small parking area. The actual put in is on the Swift River, but the Androscoggin is only 50 yards downstream.

Hanover-Rumford Boat Launch Flatwater
Easy paddling, with a slow current. The river is wider here, and float planes sometimes use it to land. To continue downstream below the dams in Rumford, paddlers must transport their boats to the Mexico Boat Launch.

Mexico Boat Launch-Dixfield Boat Launch Class 1
Once past the mill in Rumford, the valley is quiet, with farmlands lining the shores and little traffic. Can be scrapey at low water levels, but worth the navigating.
