Recreation on the
Androscoggin River

Access point descriptions refer to river right and river left as viewed facing downstream. Only public sites or bridges are included in this list. In some areas there are other commonly used access sites on the river. Ask locally and get permission before using. Some dams have portage trails and access both upstream and downstream of the dam. Some dams do not have a practicable route around, have a unusually long carry, or do not have access. Those with reasonable access and carry routes are marked PORTAGE.

Moran's Landing at Bear River Rips
Off of Rt. 2, just beyond the junction with Rt. 26. A small road on the right leads to the river just downstream of the confluence with the Bear River. Owned by the Mahoosuc Land Trust

A 19. Hanover Boat Launch
Marked by a blue sign, just before town of Hanover on Rt. 2 on the north side, (river left).

A 20. Rt. 2 bridge over the Ellis River
Just west of the village of Rumford Point on Rt. 2 is a bridge over the Ellis River. Paddlers can access the Androscoggin from here. River right is better, and there is room for parking.

Shelburne-Bear River Rips Class 1, with one Class 2- rapid
Beautiful paddling with silver maples and many islands. Some are owned by the Mahoosuc Land Trust. Many good access points allow trips of different lengths. Below Bethel, Bear River rips can tip boats, but not difficult at most water levels.

Hanover-Rumford Boat Launch Flatwater
Easy paddling, with a slow current. The river is wider here, and float planes sometimes use it to land. To continue downstream below the dams in Rumford, paddlers must transport their boats to the Mexico Boat Launch.
