Recreation on the
Androscoggin River
Map 5

Access point descriptions refer to river right and river left as viewed facing downstream. Only public sites or bridges are included in this list. In some areas there are other commonly used access sites on the river. Ask locally and get permission before using. Some dams have portage trails and access both upstream and downstream of the dam. Some dams do not have a practicable route around, have a unusually long carry, or do not have access. Those with reasonable access and carry routes are marked PORTAGE.

 A 16. Gilead River Access
Off Rt. 2 opposite the Forest Service picnic area is a blue boat access sign. Turn here and drive towards the bridge, and on the left, just before the bridge is a parking area. An gravel path leads upriver 50 yards to a path that heads to the river by a concrete gauging station. Do not use the river access just downstream of the bridge, as this is the town's dry hydrant access. Only use the access upstream of the bridge.

 A17. Newt's Landing/West Bethel River Access
Off Rt. 2, follow Ferry Road (east of Flat Rd.) to the south side of the river. Owned by the Mahoosuc Land Trust, access is via a set of log stairs.

 A18. Bethel Outdoor Adventures
Next to the Rt. 2 bridge in Bethel and just north of the river. Check in with campground before parking or launching canoes.

Shelburne-Bear River Rips Class 1, with one Class 2- rapid

Beautiful paddling with silver maples and many islands. Some are owned by the Mahoosuc Land Trust. Many good access points allow trips of different lengths. Below Bethel, Bear River rips can tip boats, but not difficult at most water levels.

Please refer to water flow classifications for definitions of the rating system, and comprehensive list of characteristics of different segments of the Androscoggin River.
