Recreation on the
Androscoggin River
Map 2

Access point descriptions refer to river right and river left as viewed facing downstream. Only public sites or bridges are included in this list. In some areas there are other commonly used access sites on the river. Ask locally and get permission before using. Some dams have portage trails and access both upstream and downstream of the dam. Some dams do not have a practicable route around, have a unusually long carry, or do not have access. Those with reasonable access and carry routes are marked PORTAGE.

A5. Thirteen Mile Woods Scenic Area
Off Rt. 16 on the Cambridge/Dummer town line. Access is a wide, horseshoe dirt road very close to the river. (river right)

A6. Pontook Dam/PORTAGE
Upstream of dam is good spot for wildlife watching, and little current makes exploring easy. Downstream of dam has .5 mile of whitewater when there are dam releases. Too low to paddle otherwise. Rough portage trail along river right.

A7. Paul O. Boffinger Conservation Area Boat Launch
Newly built boat launch facility with parking, restrooms. Paddlers can explore Wheeler Bay from here.

A8. Milan Bridge
Access the river from east side (river left) on old road bed. Steep although short bank to river.

Pontook Dam to Paul Boffinger Conservation Area Class 2+
Warning: experienced paddlers only! Dam releases from the Pontook Dam (generally Friday through Sunday) create a half mile of continuous whitewater. Properly equipped and prepared paddlers only.

Paul Boffinger Conservation Area-Horne Park Flatwater-Quickwater
Easy section, suitable for beginners, with only a few small sections of quickwater. Paddlers wishing to continue downstream must transport their boats to Gorham.
