Recreation on the
Androscoggin River
Map 15
|
| Access point descriptions refer to river right and river left as viewed facing downstream. Only public sites or bridges are included in this list. In some areas there are other commonly used access sites on the river. Ask locally and get permission before using. Some dams have portage trails and access both upstream and downstream of the dam. Some dams do not have a practicable route around, have a unusually long carry, or do not have access. Those with reasonable access and carry routes are marked PORTAGE. |

Lisbon Falls-Brunswick Quickwater
A great paddle, with one portage in the middle. The river widens out and the country is rolling and rural.
Brunswick-Merrymeeting Bay Flatwater, but affected by tide and wind.
Paddling out into the open expanse of Merrymeeting Bay is remarkable. The Androscoggin joins with the Kennebec, and heads towards Bath and then the Atlantic. A beautiful and special place to paddle, but with caution and an eye towards both the tide and the weather. Warning: Only experienced paddlers should go through the Chops. Outgoing river flows meeting incoming tidal flows can create turbulent conditions.
Please refer to water flow classifications for definitions of the rating system, and comprehensive list of characteristics of different segments of the Androscoggin River.
