Recreation on the
Androscoggin River
Map 11
|
| Access point descriptions refer to river right and river left as viewed facing downstream. Only public sites or bridges are included in this list. In some areas there are other commonly used access sites on the river. Ask locally and get permission before using. Some dams have portage trails and access both upstream and downstream of the dam. Some dams do not have a practicable route around, have a unusually long carry, or do not have access. Those with reasonable access and carry routes are marked PORTAGE. |

B 6. Twin Bridges
Off Rt. 219, the river access here is via the large island in between the two bridges. The preferred takeout is upstream of the bridge and on the right side of the island, over some sloping rock ledges. To put in here, or to portage around the rapids, carefully cross the road and walk down the paths to the downstream end of the island.
B 7. Turner Boat Launch
On Center Bridge Rd. in Turner. A public boat launch with plenty of parking and access to Gulf Island Pond.

Livermore -Twin Bridges Flatwater-Class 2+
Silver maples and other hardwoods dominate the river here. No bridges or nearby roads make this piece of the Androscoggin one of the most peaceful. Two sets of rapids are midway down, not hazardous, but take some boat control to maneuver through successfully. Warning: On river right downstream of the Twin Bridges there is a substantial ledge drop rapid. Take out on island and portage around rapids. At some water levels the channel along river left is runnable.
Twin Bridges-Gulf Island Pond Flatwater
This area of the river feels the effects of Gulf Island Pond Dam downstream. The impoundment makes it more like a lake, and the bass fishing is excellent. Large white pines and osprey are residents.
Please refer to water flow classifications for definitions of the rating system, and comprehensive list of characteristics of different segments of the Androscoggin River.
